Covered urn

This jar is covered in an ash glaze of greenish tone with a fine network of crackles. The carved lotus-petal motif on the shoulders and lid is a hallmark of ivory-glazed pieces wares such as this piece. The motif is also found on offering dishes and larger covered jars, which are thought to be inspired from Cham gold and silver containers with similar designs.Ritual and utilitarian white wares were made for use in temples or tombs during the Ly (1009-1225) and Tran (1225-1400) dynasties. The frequent appearance of the lotus motif reflects the rising importance of Buddhism, which was established as the state religion in Vietnam during the Ly dynasty. During this time, the Vietnamese moved away from copies of Chinese forms towards adaptations that were more unique to the local ceramic tradition.
