This manchu style court tunic served as a wedding costume for the Baba (Peranakan man) because many Babas were wealthy merchants and leaders of the Chinese community in the nineteenth century and their official robes were also used for weddings. Like the bride, the groom might change costumes, choosing the western suits or the costume of a Ming scholar instead, during the elaborate 12-day wedding celebrations
