Celebrations abounded during the ushering of the New Year, including sporting activities such as boat racing, a perennial favourite. Here, Malay 'kolek lumba' gather for the start of a race off Johnston's Pier, which is located on the left hand side with the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank building behind it. The Tanjong Pagar Dock Company's paddle tug, Bangkok, can also be seen on the right.
