A Geylang Police Post

This is a view of an auxiliary police station at Geylang. The early police force was mainly made up of Malays and Indians; the colonial government did not trust the Chinese community at that time because nearly 60 percent of them were members of the ‘hoey’ (secret societies). By the early 1900s, with the explosion of Chinese immigration into Singapore, the government had no choice but to recruit Chinese into the police force.
