The photograph shows the second site of the Tan Tock Seng Hospital at Serangoon Road near the junction of Balestier Road. The hospital had to be relocated from Pearl's Hill as the government had acquired the land for military barracks. Tan Tock Seng had arrived in Singapore in 1819 from Malacca where he started out as a vegetable seller before eventually becoming a wealthy businessman. He had made a generous donation for the building of the hospital in 1844.
