This is a photograph of two young Nyonyas and two young boys. The young Nyonyas wear a more modern form of the baju, having moved away from the baju panjang or long tunic, showing the changing of the fashion of the times. The baju panjang was the standard Peranakan women wear for much of the 19th century, which was long and loose fitting, making it suitable in the hot, humid climate of the region. Also, it projects a modest appearance. Nevertheless, this change of the clothing style to a more modern one retains much of the style of the old baju panjang.
