A Malay lady in 'baju panjang' and 'selendang'

The Malay lady in the photograph is wearing an open-fronted ‘baju jipan’ which is fastened with ’kerosangs’ or traditional brooches. Typically, two or three brooches would be worn, enabling the wearer to display her wealth and taste in jewellery. A ‘selendang’ or scarf is draped over her head. The selendang is used to cover the heads and faces of Malay women to the extent that they considered to be proper.
