The 'sor hei' (combing up) ceremony was considered a rite of passage and equivalent to a wedding. Therefore, an auspicious day had to be chosen to hold the ceremony. 'Amahs' (Cantonese domestic servants) would either consult a fortune-teller or refer to almanacs such as this one, compiled by a shop in Hokkien Street, to determine the date for the ceremony. Having entered into sworn sisterhood in the sor hei ceremony, amahs formed networks to help each other with work-related problems, leads on available jobs and funeral arrangements.
