This is a chest ornament and it is part of a set of chest ornaments which would have been sewn on the garment of a Peranakan bride. Different accessories and outfits were required for the 12-day traditional Peranakan wedding ceremony, during which symbolic rites were performed by the bride and groom. The Chinese Peranakan community in Indonesia is mainly found in the coastal city of Palembang and the north coast cities of Java. They were a migrant community and have also adopted many local Javanese practices.
