This butter dish features underglaze blue and overglaze enamel decoration of insects among foliage. The shape probably originated from Dutch wooden butter tubs. A cord was tied to the looped handles, as in Dutch butter tubs. Butter tubs were used in dinner services in Europe. This popular form continued throughout the 18th century and was emulated by kilns at Delft and Meissen.
