The pine, plum blossoms and bamboo are known as the 'Three Friends of Winter' which represent scholarly qualities. Combined with the magpies, regarded as harbingers of good fortune in Chinese symbolism, this type of painting was popular among Xu's many merchant-patrons who aspired to scholarly ideals.
