Beadwork is an important aspect of Peranakan material culture, and brillantly-coloured glass beads imported from Europe (known as ‘manek kacha’) or steel beads (known as ‘manek perigu’) were used.The community judged how highly accomplished a Peranakan woman was by the intricacy and workmanship of a pair of beaded slippers she makes.
