This pair of pair of beadwork coverings for slippers, worn by Peranakan women, features the chinese word ‘fu’, meaning ‘prosperity’ and the buddhist swastika symbol. Beadwork is an important aspect of Peranakan material culture, and brillantly-coloured glass beads imported from Europe (known as ‘manek kacha’) or steel beads (known as ‘manek perigu’) were used. The community judged how highly accomplished a Peranakan woman was by the intricacy and workmanship of a pair of beaded slippers she makes.
