Yarn-winder

This large wooden instrument painted in red and black lacquer and decorated with mythical forms is a weaving implement. It is used for winding yarns intended for the warp (vertical) threads. The threads form the base yarn that runs from the top to bottom on woven cloth. Chinese sources record that the Khmer learned weaving from the Siamese - it is still not clear if this was the case. There are certainly great similarities in the weaving tradition, as well as the tools weavers of both countries use.
