Pair of ladies' shoes

This unusual pair of shoes is embellished with metallic-thread embroidery. It is high-heeled, yet in a style of embroidery more reminiscent of the late 19th century. The couching and “atas timbul” techniques are also found on traditional Peranakan footwear. The combination of traditional techniques and a modern design makes it possible that this pair of shoes belonged to a Peranakan lady. A label sewn onto the inside of the shoes reads “high class shoemakers, Yoong Cheong, Beach Road, Singapore”.
