Born in Ninh Binh, Tran Luu Hau (b.1928) graduated from the Resistance Fine Arts School in Viet Bac in 1953. He then attended the V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute, a division of the USSR Academy of Fine Arts from 1956 to 1962. Hau began experimenting in abstraction in the 1960s and since the transformation of the Vietnamese economy, he has been a strong advocator of Abstract Expressionism, and is known for his expressionist renditions of still-life paintings and landscapes. Hau presents a lyrical work depicting life in the countryside that synthesizes the art techniques of East and West, by adopting Western perspective while painting on silk.
