This coin is a bronze Straits 1 cent coin issued in 1884. The obverse face of the coin shows the crowned bust of Queen Victoria, engraved by Leonard Charles Wyon who was chief engraver at the Royal Mint in London. The reverse face shows its denomination in a beaded circle, and the date. Coinage for the Straits Settlements was authorised in 1844 and declared legal tender in 1847. The Spanish dollars (issued from Spain and its colonies) used in the region were the equivalent of 100 Straits cents, and when the silver Straits dollar was introduced in 1903, it was also pegged at 100 cents. The Singaporean dollar that we still use today is a modern descendent of this original Straits dollar.
