This ceremonial hanging depicts two large elephants facing each other, surrounded by figures of humans and animals as well as decorative flora. The textile is framed by borders at the top and bottom, with floral end panels on both sides. The theme depicts a particular important royal procession in the history of Gujarat, that of the celebrated public parade held by King Siddharaja Jayasimha in 1138-39. The event was to honour the Jain Acharya, Hemachandra on the occasion of the successful completion of his magnum opus on Prakit and Apabhramsha grammars, Siddhahema Shabdanushasana. This celebrated parade has been documented repeatedly over the centuries and even today this iconic event is highly relevant to the people of Patan. In Sept 2002, nearly 900 years after the event, a re-enactment of the commemorative procession was organised in Patan.
