Born in Malaysia in 1975, Eric Chan studied art at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts in Singapore and obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia. Chan, who lives and works in both Malaysia and Singapore, clinched the Philip Morris Jurors’ Choice Award at the Singapore Arts Award in 2002.Chan, an oil painter who is known for his diffused close-up views of interiors and nature, employs flowers as metaphors for emotions. To him, the act of painting flowers, which have enjoyed a long presence in his oeuvre, is both romantic and melancholic as he attempts to capture a passing moment in a flower’s life. ‘Lilies in Motion’ demonstrates his skilful manipulation of light and shadow.
