Embroidered clothing is an essential part of the Yao identity. This is a Yao man's jacket made of black or indigo homespun cotton. An embroidered pocket with appliqué and streamers adorn the jacket's front. Under the right arm, is a row of silver buttons. Some design work is also featured. Yao boys' jackets are made the same way, only they are a smaller version.Originally from southern China, the Mien or Yao as they are often called, migrated during the mid 19th century from Laos to Thailand.
