Gift of David Abraham and John Abraham in memory of Mary Abraham

This kebaya belonged to Mary Abraham, the mother of Indian fashion designer David Abraham, who created contemporary interpretation of the kebaya using traditional Indian techniques of production. Along the seams, this lightweight voile was joined using a technique called ketuk lubang (perforated seam embroideries) which demanded one’s skillful manipulation of the fabric and sewing machine. The plaid patterns against pink background echo the use of bold, black patterns that he would engage artisans to block-print in his fashion label. David Abraham, co-founder and creative director of the label Abraham & Thakore (est. 1992) was born in Singapore to a Chinese Peranakan mother and Indian father. David spent his early childhood in Singapore, when he fondly remembered his mother’s interest in shopping and believed that her style may have influenced his love for fashion. His brand is reputed for its research and development of traditional textile techniques, such as handloom or double ikat, that are incorporated in fashion for the modern lifestyle.
