Shoes

This pair of heels from Bebe Seet is created with beadwork showing image of a lady in European frock feeding a swan. Depiction of non-Asian subjects in beading and embroidery was popular among Peranakans in the early 20th century, so this contemporary version could be seen as a reference to that period of design. With the beadwork done in her shop, Rumah Bebe, the pair of shoe faces was then cobbled by a local shoemaker in Chinatown.Bebe Seet is the founder of Rumah Bebe, a boutique that offers Peranakan cuisine and fashion. As a Singaporean, Peranakan designer specialising in beaded shoes and bags, she has also been conducting beading classes since 1995. She is well-known for reviving the art of Peranakan beadwork from the 1990s, and for having one of the most exquisite workmanship on Peranakan beadwork.
