This is an 18th century Dutch colonial teak chest with brass fittings, with later mounted bun feet for use as furniture. Such chests were used by Dutch East India Company (VOC) officials for their travels. However, the dimensions and number of chests carried per official was regulated, with the Governor General permitted to take 18 chests of this "five foot" size until 1791 when the permitted sizes were reduced.
