This weft ikat sarong consists of a chevron pattern in wine and purple with a simple kepala of pale stripes at the centre of the cloth. It was probably woven in the 1950s on an ATBM (Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin), a relatively simple manually operated frame loom designed as part of an Indonesian government initiative to develop cottage industries in impoverished communities. Cloths in locally popular styles such as this example, as well as a wide variety of other styles were manufactured all over Indonesia.
