Fabric templates were used to guide the embroiderer. Along the central border is a repeating motif of a pair of birds flanking a singular lily stalk, set against a foliate background. A row of flowers on both sides complete the pattern. The small holes of double-thread Penelope canvas and other kinds of counted-thread canvases, made it possible to create out of beads designs which were originally used for silk embroidery. The fabric was cut diagonally so as to align beads in a vertical position.
