Two Letters of Somerset Maugham (1956 and 1960)

These are two letters of English playwright, novelist and short-story writer Somerset Maugham, dating from 1956 and 1960. Somerset Maugham paid three visits to the Raffles Hotel in 1921, 1926 and 1959. The first letter is written from Egypt, permitting the supervisor of the Raffles Hotel to use his now famous quote ‘Raffles stands for all the fables of the exotic East.’ The second letter is from his villa in France, to the Manager of Raffles Hotel Mr Schutzman, thanking him for his ‘help and kindness’ during his time in Singapore. The present Raffles Hotel has a suite named after Somerset Maugham.
