Shan bowl

This bowl is decorated with overlapping scallops, each inhabited by creatures amidst a backdrop of vegetal scrolls. These creatures are drawn mostly from the Burmese zodiac, though mythical birds in various poses are also found.Thinly beaten and light, with decoration in low relief, this silver bowl is exemplary of a more traditional style of silver-smithing that survived in the Shan States, further away from colonial centers. The finely beaten and engraved designs of this bowl attest to the silversmith’s technical mastery, while the dynamic poses of the figures display his creativity.
