The collective Baba Malay term for dining ware is 'pinggan mangkok', which literally means 'plates and bowls'. The dinner service can also include cups, saucers, spoons and spoon rests. Wealthy Peranakan families often commissioned the highest quality porcelain wares for special occasions that would bear their surnames. These wares would typically have elaborate decorations of phoenix and peony motifs, and colourful backgrounds. In Southeast Asia, blue and white porcelain was probably the most widely used of the Chinese export wares. Highly durable, they were used on a daily basis in the Peranakan kitchen and for dining. As traditional colours of mourning, blue and white wares were also used in making offerings to the ancestors during funeral ceremonies.
