The Metropolitan Young Men’s Christian Association (MYMCA) at Stevens Road

The headquarters of the Metropolitan Young Men’s Christian Association (MYMCA) at Stevens Road was officially opened in 1981. The association was established in 1946 and was initially called the Chinese YMCA. Founded by Chinese philanthropist Dr. Chen Su Lan and a group of church leaders to cater to the needs of the local Chinese and operating on the same principles as the wider YMCA movement, the Chinese YMCA ran various training programmes and a night school from its premises at Selegie Road from 1948. The association shifted to Palmer Road in 1957 before relocating to its current site at Stevens Road in 1978. It was renamed the Metropolitan YMCA in 1974 to reflect its wider focus of serving Singapore’s multi-racial population.
