Sarong with camels and tents

The decorations on this batik sarong (tubular skirt) are in the style associated with the north coast of Java. The main field of the skirt depicts a procession, presumably to Mecca. The procession includes bearded men carrying flag bearing the words 'Flag of the Ruler of Mecca' in Malay. This skirt could have been commissioned to be worn by a Muslim, perhpas to commemorate the wearer's or his or her family member's completion of the pilgrimage to Mecca.
