The former Malacca Club building

Established in the late 1880s, the Malacca Club was the first European social club to be formed in Malacca. It initially occupied a building at Fort Road that formerly housed the Eastern Exchange Telegraph Company. In 1917, construction was completed on a new building near the town square to serve as the clubhouse, where the Club remained until the expiry of its land lease in 1984. The iconic building with its domed towers was acquired by the government and converted into a museum known as the Proclamation of Independence Memorial. In 1985, the Club shifted into two renovated shophouses at Melaka Raya known as the New Townhouse, which houses the Club today.
