This white glazed, globular jug has been pierced and moulded featuring scrolling floral motifs and an inscription in bold Kufic- Abbassid script. The inscription reads: “And blessings and happiness and good fortune.” Such whitewares were moulded from a man-made material known as stonepaste. Stonepaste was the Islamic potters’ response to imitate the whiteness of Chinese porcelain which was greatly admired.Calligraphy has always been considered the noblest and most featured art in the Islamic world as it transmits the Divine Revelations from God. As one of the main decorative forms in Islamic art, calligraphy can be found a variety of media—from manuscripts to large inscriptions on stone or on ceramics such as this.
