A 1981 study concluded that an all-bus public transport system was untenable given road-traffic congestion, and a rail system would be necessary. Construction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line started in 1983, and the first trains started running in 1987. A 42-station MRT system was completed in 1990.
