The nine-cupped lamp is used for waving before the deity. Hence it is made small and light. In the most Tamil Hindu temples, the 'shodashopachara puja' or 16 forms of worship is customarily practised during festive occasions. The mirror, fan, flywhisk, umbrella and various types of lamps are included during worship.
