‘Nerah’ by Min Chen

This is a one-of-a-kind origami light sculpture created by Min Chen for 'Come-in', an international touring exhibition developed by the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations, Stuttgart, Germany, and presented by the National Museum of Singapore in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Singapore. The exhibition required participation from Singaporean artists to complement the German exhibits. In consultation with the German curator, Min Chen was selected because his style resonated with the theme of the exhibition, which was about how contemporary artists used design as a medium in their art-making processes. The lantern celebrates light as divine providence given for comfort, joy, vision, revelation and life. The interplay between the complex geometric pleat-form origami, which forms an organic convex arch, and the linear metallic frame, makes this piece a visually dynamic and exciting example of contemporary craft-based design.
