The ‘Nanyang Youth’ was a series of Chinese books that were locally published in Singapore. They became popular reading materials for children and youths during the 1950s. These books contained folk tales and popular stories from China, Southeast Asia, and the Western world. They not only helped to shape the local readers’ regional and global cultural perspectives, but also nurtured the careers of several aspiring local writers. ‘Nanyang Youth’ was published by the Nanyang Siang Pao. It was founded by prominent Chinese magnate and philanthropist Tan Kah Kee in 1923. The daily merged with the Sin Chew Jit Poh in 1983 to form the Lianhe Zaobao, which is still being published today.
