‘To Have and Have Not’ and ‘Gypsy Wildcat’ are 1944 American films. The former starred Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, while the latter starred Maria Montez and Jon Hall. The films were screened in Singapore and Malaysia in 1946.American films streamed into Singapore and Malaysia in the 1920s and the number grew tremendously over the years. By the late 1930s, Hollywood films constituted 70 percent of the films shown here. The others were Chinese, Indian, Malay, British and European films. During this period, most European and English-language films were screened in more upmarket theatres such as Cathay, Capitol, Alhambra and Rex.
