An Indian man carrying the kavadi at Thaipusam

There are various ways devotees give thanks to Lord Murugan during Thaipusam. Carrying kavadi, as seen in this postcard, is a popular form, which usually involves piercing the body with spikes and metal hooks. Celebrations are also marked by chariot processions, while some devotees carry pots of milk known as 'paal kudam' as a show of love to the god.
